Artist - Educator

About Me:

I am a North Carolina artist and educator.  Raised in High Point, NC, I showed an interest in art at an early age. I was lucky enough to have access to an amazing retired art teacher who taught private lessons nearby. I think that is where my love of art, learning, and sharing what I know began.  I graduated with a BFA in Studio Art from Wingate University. My focus was on drawing, though I was also the darkroom photography TA. I hate how darkroom photography has become such a lost art now.  After graduating, I got my lateral entry license and have been teaching art for 15 years. Along with teaching for NC public schools, I also continue to create my own art, take on commission artwork, and teach private lessons. I am continuously striving to find a balance between work, finding time to do my own work, and being an involved mother to my two girls and wife.

About my work

My work is inspired by the use of light and shadow.  I’ve always been in awe of the way light and shadows play together to change the feeling of an image.  I strive to have my work be able to express moods and emotions through the subtle gestures of the subject and the use of light within the image.

Though I’ve been trained in several mediums, I find myself gravitating towards pencils, charcoals and oils.  People, with all their moods, expressions and emotions, inspire and challenge me.  I find it amazing how someone can portray a mood or emotion without even showing their face, using just the subtle way they carry themselves.  They are a subject matter that I am constantly drawn to, especially now that I have children of my own.
